Pierre Cardin

Legendary French designer, fashion designer and innovator Pierre Cardin.

Pierre Cardin was born in San Biagio di Callalta, Italy in 1922. His real name is Pietro Cardin. He moved to Paris in 1945, studied architecture and worked first for Paquin, then for Elsa Schiaparelli.

He started his fashion designer career after the Second World War and became head of the studio of Christian Dior in 1947.

In 1950 he set up his own fashion salon and in 1953 became a member of the prestigious French Association Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. His bulles (clothes with bubbles), quickly became known throughout the world. Ahead of his time, in 1959 Pierre Cardin wanted to make Haute-Couture more accessible and launched his first Prêt-à- Porter (ready-to- wear) collection, bringing high fashion to the general public.

Cardin became known for his avant-garde style, often ignoring the female form, he preferred geometric forms and patterns. He was responsible for the spread of unisex fashion.

Since 1991 Pierre Cardin has held the position of honorary ambassador of UNESCO and since 2009 he has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. He has initiated many humanitarian projects and is an untiring advocate for tolerance and mutual understanding.

Pierre Cardin has received a number of awards and decorations from institutions all over the world.

Since 1977 he has on several occasions been given Dé d'Or (golden thimble), the highest honour of French haute couture. In 1983 he was made Knight of the Legion of Honour and decorated as “Chavalier des Arts et des Lettres”. Cardin was the first fashion designer in history to win, in 1992, a chair in the French Academy of Fine Arts at the French Institute.

This collection of Pierre Cardin products has been carefully produced from selected materials and created with emphasis on design and detail.

History has shown that Pierre Cardin is not only a fashion trademark, he is also a symbol of timelessness.
